Wikipedia: Comparison of online backup services

I tried several of the online 'unlimited' backup service providers, and I am not to happy with them (especially working with photographs or video). I don't think they are great for storing all your data, but they work well with your 'current smaller data files'.

I have about 750 GB of data. I can divide the data into 2 groups- files I am currently working on, and old record files. I prefer to keep all my data on a single hard drive, with a full backup of all the data, on other drives.

    MICROSOFT SYNCTOY

I used the free program "Microsoft sync toy", to sync data between the PC and a second hard drive. You have complete control. I can plug a second hard drive into a SATA cable of the PC, and rapidly copy files, using "Microsoft Sync Toy". It shows you which files would be copied or deleted. I can remove this drive from the PC and save it off-site. Using a SATA cable is much faster than a USB connection. (USB 3.0 may be a different story.)

The problem with sync toy is that syncing isn't live.

I still prefer this method, because you don't need bandwith, you can quickly copy large quantities of data; and you have complete control.

    MICROSOFT LIVE MESH

"Microsoft live mesh" solved the "live update" problem of "synctoy", but I noted files just "disappeared" from my computers when this program was used. It works great, but you need to be extremely careful what you do. So, I removed "live mesh" from my computers.

    APPLE iCLOUD

(This isn't supposed to be a backup program.)

With the iPad came Apple's iCloud. The dealbreaker with iCloud photostream is that you can't delete a single photograph from photostream. You need to delete the account with all the photos and reload all. I spoke to a supervisor at Apple's technical support, and he confirmed it.

The only practical method on the iPad is to create a directory on your PC, containing photos you want to display, and load it to the iPad, using i-tunes. This works very well, and you have full control.

    ONLINE DATA PROVIDERS

I tried myPC Backup and Carbonite and I don't like either. Both have "dealbreaker" problems.

    myPc Backup

myPC Backup have a live sync folder and a backup section. You can't delete or rearrange files in the backup section- and this is a dealbreaker to me. The sync folder works perfectly, but it is only 1GB in size. You can pay for more, but it is expensive to host 750 GB of data.

    Carbonite

I have a 1 Mbps upload speed, and it maked uploading a slow process. Carbonite slows your upload speed down when you upload more than 200 GB of data. The more you upload, the slower your upload becomes. This is a dealbreaker.

    Mozy

Here is the current pricing of Mozy:
    http://mozy.com/home/pricing/

    125 GB storage = $9.99 / month
•Add an additional 20 GB of space for $2 per month.

Therefore, 750GB data storage costs =

    (750GB - 125GB) = 625 GB / ($2/20GB) = $62,50 + $9.99 = $72,49 / month

This is about the same price as a hard drive !

    MY CONCLUSION

    "old data"

Using an external hard drive, and storing the data off-site makes the most sense for keepng backup copies of large quantities "old" data. (e.g old Holiday and family photos; or old commercial photographs).

Microsoft sync toy or similair program works great, and you have full control. You don't need bandwith, it is fast, and the costs are low. You can buy a hard drive at the same cost of a months storage with Mozy.

    -----

    "current data"

It make sense to store your `current data` with a backup service provider, in a "sync folder". The latest files of your website or current work files can be stored with an online backup provider, and it is accessable online and to several computers.

Most of the online backup providers have "sync folder" options available, or included with the backup accounts. Some can provide you with older versions of the file, in case you made a mistake and need to recover a file.

As an alternative to the "sync folder" hosted by a 3rd party, you can have remote access to your files by using a "Western Digital: My Book Live".

This doesn't solve the problem of theft; or storing your backup data off-site.

General info on the Western Digital "My Book Live" drive.

  • My hard drive crashed and I lost all my family photos and precious data. Thankfully I had my computer backed up online with MyPCBackup and I was able to quickly recover everything.
