New Nikon D800 Announced [36 mp - craters on the moon territory]
  • StephenStephen February 7
It looks like it's designed for studio, landscape, and medium format photos judging by the high MP count and low frame rate (i.e. speed is not a concern).

I would have liked if the camera had better ISO and lower MP count.

As a second camera to the D4; I think the D800 compliments it well. There appears to be little overlap (other than the video) in the main features.

The D4 for one job - the D800 for another. And for three grand; that's alot of camera.

I pre-ordered two Nikon D4 bodies ... and the 36megapixels make me glad I did.

The D800 will undoubtably be a fantastic camera, but I just don't need those huge files as a wedding photographer. But if I had a job where I needed the pixels, I would surely buy or rent one.

With the new Fuji X-Pro-1 and the Canon GX1 ... and whatever DSLRs Canon are going to unleash in the near-future, this is exciting times for photographer with all this sweet gear.

With the high megapixals on the d800, I would think it's better to stay with the d700. The iso control will be better ie less noise at high iso.

Unfortunate you don't have the ability to switch to a Small RAW like Canon, then you could take advantage of the whole camera beside the large RAW files.

Amazing detail, especially Sample Image 3, the 'jungle' but look at the jpeg size, damn, 29.7Mb.

But then open it in Photoshop and check the details in it at 100%, the bark, etc. amazing. If I was looking for a landscape camera, I would seriously consider this.

I decided to do some work on that bride sample [great shot] and save as PSD file.

When working with the D3s and if I save PSDs, layers in tact, they range around the 150-250Mb filesize, but, this bride shot, with my normal tweaking, skintone, lips, eyes, etc. the PSD filesize is a whopping 1.02G . . . ya better have some oomph in your system and lots disc space if wanting to save a few of those puppies.

Nikon's naming standards aside, the D800 seems like better news for those wanting a cheaper D3x than for those wanting an upgrade for the D700.

It's one good looking camera though.

I had a look at those files ... and wow! This camera is going to make a lot of landscape and architecture photographers very happy.

Regarding the ISO comments vs a D700, when you read through Cliff Mauter's blog he believed it was on the same par as the D3/D700, not sure if this is at 36MP or after downsizing to the same resolution of D3/D700?

DxO gave the D800 their highest rating ever, putting it on par with medium format cameras.

DP Review is also loving the camera:

But with this one caveat .. file size. They are talking about 30Mb fine JPGs !!

The file size doesnt bother me at all. Hard drives are inexpensive these days. If someone doesnt need such high resolution, they can change their settings and it will produce a smaller file size. But it is good to have the ability to shoot in such high resolution if you are doing landscapes or architecture.

I cant wait to get my hands on one of these !
