On camera outdoor flash
  • jcole244jcole244 January 2011
Neil, after reading your book, it shows you taking pictures that are near building bouncing the flash as you were indoors. I have a few questions:
    1. when there are no buildings to you shoot with the flash head straight
    2. are you still using the black foaming thing outdoors (near buildings) as well
    3. last do you ever use the stiffen diffuser out doors

    Thanks Jerry

    Jerry ...

When there's nothing to bounce off:

I only use the black foamie thing if it is useful in blocking my light from directly hitting my subject.
Otherwise it has no use outside.

When I shoot outside, and I can only rely on my on-camera flash, then I don't use the Stofen

    Hi Neil
I started using TTL and FEV adjustments, and I also uses the camera's EVC adjustment to get the right exposure metering then i adjust my FEC. Am I on the right direction?

In my Nikon D90, there is a meter line in the viewfinder and I adjust my setting at 0 to get the right exposure (ISO, SPEED, APERTURE). My camera has limitations on its ISO only at 800 or indoors and flash sync speed at 200 shutter speed and the aperture of the lens say f2.8 for a 70-200mm. If I am on the edge then i adjust the EV values to get to 0 in the viewfinder. From there I apply the FEC (flash at TTL mode) to get to what i really wanted an image to look like with softer shadows. is this method correct?

I found the answer at Tangent 08-Flash Exposure comp. whew! Neil thanks for your knowledge and generosity to share this to everyone.
